NameChanger : Change your file names with ease
I’m a collector. Pictures, videos, articles, urls, everything I find interesting or useful, I save them. As a result, I have tons of various things on my disk now. To manage them, I need to change their names, or else I should have trouble finding them later. And that’s why I need NameChanger, a free app that does a very good job at changing names.
Main Window
This is NameChanger’s main window. Click “+” to add the files.
Then these files will be listed under the Original filename column. As you can see, these filenames are with extensions. You can hide them by checking “Hide Extensions” in Option
Start Changing Names
NameChanger offers us 9 ways to change filenames systematically. And the 9 ways fall into 3 kinds: replace, add and remove. The first 4 ways in the menu are the same kind, they replace part of the original names. I’m gonna take “Replace First Occurrence With” for example.
It take 3 steps to change names. First, enter the letter you want to have replaced in the text box on the left. Then type its replacement into the right text box. The preview of new names will appear under the Renamed filename column. If you are satisfied with these new names, hit Rename. Done. Don’t forget to click “Rename”, or else the file names won’t be actually changed. In the example below, I replaced letter “C” with “@”. The files that don’t have letter C in their names remain unchanged. So these replacing methods is ideal for changing filenames that already have systematical names.
Sequence
The name changing method I often use and find most convenient is Sequence. This method allows me to add categories and numbers to file names or totally replace them with new names. Choose “Sequence” in the menu, a new dialogue should pop up. Then you can enter the sequence name, select position of the sequence name (append or prepend), set number of digits. You can even the starting number. In the example below, I make the sequence name “-Pixiv-” to be shown after the original name and 2 digits number start from 0. So the new name of the first file is (＞ω＜)-Pixiv-00. If you don’t want to keep the original name at all, select Replace Entire Filename.
Replace Entire Filename
Image Browser
Besides changing names, NameChanger also offers us a quick way to check the files that we just have name changed. NameChanger calls it “Image Browser” It seems it was designed for changing image names. Anyway, click Image Browser on the top right conner, a window with the files with new names will show up. OK, here is what’s unique about this Image Browser. We’ve just renamed these images in number sequence, right? But this sequence is automatically decided by the order we add these images into NameChanger, which means this sequence is not necessarily the sequence you want. Image Browser allows you to readjust the image sequence.
All you need to do is to drag the image to where you want it to be. For instance, I want the second image “Pixiv-01″ in the window above to be the third image. So I drag it to the location of the third image. Then both name and location of the 2 images are switched (see the window below). Clever.
Append & Prepend & Date
Let’s get back to the next 3 methods: Append, Prepend and Date. These two methods offers to add something to form new filenames. Pretty easy. Just enter what you what to add.
Adding date is always a much easy way, of course. You can choose a date to add or use the File date.
Remove Characters
We have gone through methods of replacing and adding. Let’ move on to removing. Removing Characters is a little complicated since you need to enter from where to remove and how many letters to remove. So we have to select two numbers. The one on the left decides from which letter to delete. Remember that 0 means Removing from the firs letter. 0 equals there is no letter before. And the number on the right decides how many characters to remove. In the example below I select 0 and 1. Thus the first letter “P” is removed.
